Classification according to H.R. Robinson: Imperial Italic A Continental classification: Type Weisenau - Nijmegen

This is the earliest model of the Weisenau-type helmet, which stretches over 200 years of development up to the 'Niedermörmter'. This model has shaped our image of the Roman legionaire.

This helmet carries simple but distinct 'eyebrows', which stabilised the construction and were typical of the 'Gallic' models during the Roman empire. There are ear openings, though without the ear guard flaps, developed in later models. The brow bracket is especially massive and makes an observer of the original suppose that this helmet model constantly slipped into the wearer's field of vision.

This detailed reproduction of this find from Nijmegen (Netherlands) proves that the helmet is well-blanced and wearable in spite of the heavy brow bracket.

Age determination: late 1st century b.c. through first half of 1st century a.d.  The original was found with pottery dated during the reign of Emperor Augustus.
