Classification according to H.R. Robinson: Imperial Italic H

Continental classification: Type Weisenau - Niedermörmter / Guttmann

Detailed replica of the original 'AG 800' from the famous collection of Axel Guttman, which was auctioned several years ago. The original river find is said to come from the Balkans but the exact location is unknown.

In reference to the ornamentation, this helmet is also known as 'mouse and bread loaf'. While the characteristic round bread loaf shape is known based on finds from an an excavated bakery in Pompeji, the mouse or rat was a frequently used symbol that could be found on lamps or knife handles. This helmet is based on a find from Niedermörmter (Rhineland, Germany). Compared to the earlier 'Weisenau' models, its neck guard is particularly long - a response to the weapons used by the opponents of the time. The original's missing cheek guards were reconstructed following diligent research. The magnificent original was painstakingly replicated, even reproducing the fine latice design on the brow element.
